on the market there are many different types of massage oils available, but it is also possible to prepare them at home with simple natural products, this way we can combine the ingredients and flavours that we prefer.  Let us now see how to create a practical massage oil using essential oils and herbs that help to relief sore muscles and improve the status of general wellbeing.

To prepare a good massage oil we need :

Essential oils for massage

Each essential oil has its own therapeutic function, hence according to the type of oil that we want to prepare we must choose a specific oil and combine it with the specific herbs according to our needs.

Lets therefore prepare a massage oil that helps relieve some muscular tension and give us a little wellness feeling.

The mixture of products that we have chosen to prepare this massage oil is excellent to give relief from muscle pain, stress and also anxiety.

This solution is in fact not only ideal to relieve the tension that may arise between nerves and muscles, but also useful to treat headache enough in fact all you must do is spread a small amount on your temples, the front and the back of the your.  Hence choose:

  • Frankincense

The essential oil of frankincense helps to reduce the levels of anxiety and stress.  It is also recommended for the treatment of pain in the joints and spine.  This product is excellent in giving some comfort from a hectic life.

  • Lavender

Herbs for massages

  • Arnica

Arnica is a plant often used to treat sprains, inflamed muscles and relief from pain in general.  It is also ideal for treating bruises and contusions:  a few drops directly on the affected area will help the bruises to heal much more quick.

  • Symphytum

The symphytum has a strong pain relieving ability.  It is a perennial herbaceous plant, not very well known in Italy, but mostly loved in the rest of the world (especially in Great Britain) thanks to its healing and beneficial power.

Its viscous consistency will give the massage oil an emollient character for the skin.

DIY massage oil recipe

Ingredients

-1 and ½ cup coconut oil or another oil such as jojoba or sweet almond oil
-¼ cup of dried arnica flowers
-¼ cup of dried symphytum leaves
-15 drops of lavender essential oil
-10 drops of frankincense essential oil

 

It is important that the ingredients are placed in a hot environment without being cooked.  Pour the coconut oil and herbs in a container suitable to be put in the oven, mix everything well and place inside the oven turned off (preheated).  Let them stay in the oven for at least four hours.

With the help of a strainer or gauze, filter the oil into a glass jar.  If you have chosen the coconut oil, remember that it will tend to solidify; it is therefore important to use a container that allows you to fit your hand inside it.

If you use other oils that are more liquid instead, any type of jar or bottle will do. After filtering the oil, throw away the herbs that are left over.  At this point, add the essential oils to the solutions and mix everything well.

Just a very small amount of this diy massage oil diy is needed to obtain pleasant results.  The recommended dose to be used is about a tablespoon, this will be sufficient to avoid having an unpleasant greasy feeling.
