Mandarin (tangerine) is one of the most appreciated fruits in the citrus family. It is light orange in colour & has small juicy segments containing a pulp of the same colour as the skin. A mandarin tree can produce up to 600 fruits per year and can reach a height of 4 metres. Its fruits, the only sweet ones in the citrus family are very much appreciated for the benefic properties & for their contribution towards our health, especially during the cold winter months.

Lets begin with the nutritional values: 100g of this fruit, gives us 53Kcal, 0.800g of protein & 13.300g of carbohydrates. Mandarins are very rich in vitamin C & it is advisable to consume them on a regular basis during the winter season, because their vitamin content helps protect our organism against common winter disorders such as cold & flu. The mandarin pulp helps protect mucus & capillaries & contains a lot of vitamin A, group B vitamins, but also iron, magnesium & folic acid. This fruit is easily digested & also helps correct digestion. It also helps regulate blood pressure, stimulates diuresis, and can also contrast water retention. Just like other fruits of the same family for example oranges mandarins also have anti tumoral properties, especially with regards to our liver. It is reccomended to drink regularly mandarin juice or eat its pulp especially when the fruit is in season. Mandarin consumption reduces the risk of cancer in the digestive system & also reduces the risk of strokes. Mandarin also helps in improving our visual functions (eyesight), lower cholesterol level in our blood, & strengthen our immune system. Mandarins are rich in anti-oxidants & help purify our organism; they manage to strengthen it & protect it from infections & dieseases. Mandarin consumption is highly reccomended for who suffers from asthma or bronchitis.
Mandarin and its uses
It is best to consume mandarins fresh, after being peeled & divided into segments. It can either be consumed on its own, together with other fruit in a platter or else also with vegetables in a cold salad. Freshly squeezed mandarin juice is rich in vitamins & can be consumed by itself or mixed in a smoothie. Often mandarins are also used as decorations for cakes & pies, its juice is than used for ice pops or slush (granita) or even Jelly. The Mandarin fruit is also very appreciated in the cosmetic market, especially its skin from which an essential oil is obtained, used to prepare products against cellulite, water retention & also for massages. Last but not least mandarin skin is also used in the preparation of Oily products such as creams, balms & lotions which are generally used for leg toning massages, because they help in the absorption of liquids.
