What is argan oil and where does it come from

We hear more and more often speaking about argan oil in the cosmetic industry but also at table, but from where is it  exactly and why has it become so popular?

The plant from which the oil gets its name is called Argania spinosa, and it is a typical plant of the territory of Morocco, but you can also find it in Algeria, in the region of Tindouf. This plant is very large in size, and can reach a height of 8 or 10 metres, it is also capable of living long, even up to 150, or 200 years. The weather is necessary for the welfare of this plant.

The fruit is very meaty, of oval shape, with a length equal to about 30 mm. Its colour, when its mature, is yellow with some nuances of dark brown; and inside we find the nut from which the Argan oil is extracted. Within this nut there are three seeds that are often indicated on the market under the name of “Argan almonds”.

A medium sized Argan tree can produce a quantity of seeds equal to 8 kilos in 1 year.

Argan oil may be for cosmetic or food use: from the stones that have not been toasted the oil is extracted for cosmetic use, which has a much clearer colour; on the contrary, Argan oil for food is extracted from the toasted stones, and has a much darker colour.

In the countries of origin it is very commonly used for food here instead it is more common in the cosmetic use.

ARGAN OIL PROPERTIES AND BENEFITS

Argan Oil is ideal for use on dry and mature skin, but especially on the hair, thanks to its properties, nutrients and to the fact that it is rich in polyphenols and vitamin E.

It is therefore an extremely moisturizing product capable of restoring the flat pentyn but attention because it can also grease and indeed if we want to start using Argan Oil on our skin, then it is ideal to start with once a week (maximum twice) with a scrub followed by the application of the oil, which should then be massaged on the whole body. In this way we hydrated deeply the skin after having removed the toxins and dead cells, or we can add a few spoonfuls of pure Argan oil cream in order not to grease too much.

Another easy trick if we have time is to keep the Argan Oil on the skin for half an hour or more and then rinse it off before dressing.

Argan Oil can also be used as a mask for the hair before shampoo: it must be applied over the entire length and kept on the hair for half an hour always to restructure the hair fibre or to spread itself through very dry, or particularly brittle hair.

Argan Oil also has anti-aging properties that can be exploited not only on the skin and in fact precisely to take advantage of these benefits it can be used as a dressing in alternative to olive oil.  Naturally the oil for food use must be purchased and it should always be used cold.
