There is no doubt that lavender is one of the most sought for aromatic plants in the herbal sector primarily but also in the cosmetic & ornamentale sectors too. It outstands other plants for its scent & also for its look: it is infact recognised as the best ornamental plant. Lavender belongs to the Lamiaceae family and includes more than thirty different species. Lavender also previously known as Lavandula Officinalis, is a perennial plant that originates from the meditterranean regions. This plant is grown widely in France, especially in the provence region & is widespread all over Italy, at any height: we find it on the plains but also on the mountain areas up to a maximum height or 1800m.
Plant structure
Lavender has a woody base & forms a lot of branches, creating a thick foliage with numerous stems. The leaves have a narrow spear shape and are greenish-grey in colour. Its flowers are very small and gathered together forming a sort of bush they have a very pleasant scent and are violet in colour. Blossoming usually occurs in june, however the flowers are picked at different occasions during different periods this depends mainly on what use is to be done & which properties are to be used. Etymologically speaking the name comes from latin meaning wash, infact since ancient times lavender was actually used for washing, disinfecting floors, but also for cleansing & washing the body, also thanks to its pleasant scent.
The benefits of Lavender
Lavender is known to have many benefits & is used in various fields, it is widely used in the physiotherapeutic field as a remedy towards various disorders. The leaves & flowers give a very important volatile essential oil that is responsible for the main properties of the plant. It has a sedative & rebalancing action towards the nervous system & is usually reccomended against palpitations, nervousness & other pyschosomatic dieseases. It is decongestant, mucolitic & expectorant and is very effective in curing respiratory dieseases through inhalation or vapour. It has also anti-inflammatory & antirheumatic properties, and is also reccomended to relieve pain, be it of articular or muscular origin also in the case of distortions, bruises, or strains. It already seems to be a miracle plant, but it does not end here. Lavender also has also antiseptic properties, it is used in washing infected wounds and also for ulcers, because it is capable of helping the skin heal & grow quicker, & also soothe irritations caused by insect stings & spider bites. It also has a carminative & antispasmodic action towards digestive system and therefore makes digestion easier. Last but not least, Lavender is also very useful in cases of colitis or intestinal inflammation. In aromatherapy, the lavender essential oil is used to perfume rooms in cases of insomnia, just vaporize a bit of floral water in the bedroom or directly on the pillow. Lavender is also reccomended against migraines, rheumatic pain & is used to massage the painful areas. It seems that lavender is the ideal plant to have handy at home ready & perfect for every use.
