What is Riboflavin & why is it so Important?

Riboflavin is a water-soluble nutrient,  it was identified for the first in milk’s serous protein component in 1879 when is was called Lactochrome.  It helps transfor food in energy & in the removal of toxins in the liver.  It is also necessary for healthy skin & blood cells & for an efficient digestion.

Low levels of riboflavin are normally combined with a shortage of other water-soluble vitamins & can also be caused due to other conditions like, Celiac diesease, Ulcerative colitis, Chron’s diesease, malignant tumors & alcoholism.  Symptoms of a shortage in riboflavin are: a dry mouth, cut & cracked lips & mouth, inflamed tongue, moist & flaking skin, normochromic & normocytic anemia.  Normally those who follow a vegetarian diet or who lack dairy & meat products suffer from riboflavin shortages.  Vitamin supplements are necessary for who follows a badly organised vegeterian diet but they are not necessary if a good selection of fruit & vegetables containing riboflavin are consumed like for example spinach.

What is the recommended dose?
The recommended daily allowance for riboflavin is 1.7mg calculated on a 2000 calorie diet, however a higher consumption of Riboflavin has no harmful effect on our organism.  According to the Natural Medicines Database, riboflavin supplements not only help in case of shortage of this substance but can also reduce migraines, & help prevent cataract.
