Medicinal Plants false myths and true properties.
The use of medicinal plants is nowadays becoming more common and almost everybody tries to find remedies through herbs and medicinal plants but as all other things they are surrounded by myths and truth. Well lets then put a bit of clarity starting off by saying that it is always recommended to seek expert advice from people in this industry, such as herbalists or naturopaths who can recommend the right plant or herb without causing any damage.
Let us begin from the false myths:
- Like all the natural herbs they cannot do any harm to our health (absolutely false because these herbs very often are amongst the main ingredients of drugs and medicine because of their rich properties and functions some of which are rather serious)
- The results of the various treatments depend on the natural remedies processed with the plants and herbs (even this is false because you need to know how to choose the appropriate herbs, how to combine them, know what type of interactions they have between each other and above all know in what cases to use them)
- In the case of intake of medicines you do not need to tell the doctor that you take supplements with medicinal herbs or make use of medicinal plants (this is one of those rather dangerous myths, in fact it is necessary to tell the doctor if you take supplements precisely because they could be badly combined with the drugs or even alter the effectiveness or worsen the contraindications)
- Using various herbs and combining them with substitutes of similar appearance does not affect health. (once again it must be well understood that these herbs are not innocuous and it is not possible to combine them without understanding their principles and characteristics)
Truth on medicinal plants
- The remedies of medicinal herbs can be more useful that some clinical treatments when used properly and consciously. (The same way as drugs/medicines, herbs can definitively solve some health problems, so much so that as I have already said most of the drugs were born thanks to the principles previously studied in plants)
- Some herbs consumed in large doses may cause diseases due to their high toxicity (some herbs if taken in massive doses may be toxic and cause damage which could be even serious and irrepairable to our organism in the same way as certain drugs)
- The remedies processed with medicinal herbs have a delicate process, hence it is ideal to consult a specialist (as well as with the medicines you must seek specialist advice in order not to incur in bigger problems or as a popular saying goes: “It fixes one thing and ruins another”)
