Colitis what to avoid and what to eat!
Colitis is a very widespread disorder, discover how you can improve it, what to avoid and what to eat to feel better.
In the case of colitis infact the first possible cure is precisely the food, we therefore need to know what to eat and what to avoid.
The ulcerative colitis is a form of inflammatory bowel disease that can cause inflammation and ulcers on the lining of the intestinal wall, and reaches also the rectum and colon.
The most common symptoms are:
– pain,
– swelling
– diarrhea and/or constipation.
The symptoms are quite cyclic and infact we get alternating periods of acute pain to periods of complete absence.
Colitis what to avoid
Some foods are capable of worsening the situation, hence it is good to know which they are and to avoid them perhaps in the more acute periods. Lets see them: Colitis what to avoid and what to eat!
- Beans: Beans mostly all legumes have a high fibre content and can produce gases for which they are not absolutely suitable, it is however possible to take some measures such as removing the outer film of chick peas or beans and in this way you make the legumes more tolerable for the intestine.
- Coffee and tea: coffee, tea and all other drinks containing caffeine or beverages containing guarana are stimulating and can worsen the state of the intestine.
- Dairy products and derivatives: colitis is often associated with intolerance to lactose, in reality those who suffer only of colitis must not necessarily avoid all dairy products, infact suffering from colitis does not necessarily mean to also be intolerant to lactose, certainly this intolerance also worsens the colitis situation and especially in the case of confirmed colitis it is a good thing to reduce the, consumption of milk, cheese and dairy products.
- Broccoli: The notorious broccoli but also cabbages, Brussels sprouts and celery, filamentous vegetables with a high fibre content, are not easily digestible and can cause gas, swelling and cramps. These particular ingredients can be eaten only if well cooked or cut into very very small pieces.
- Seeds: If you suffer from ulcerative colitis you must absolutely avoid seeds. If you regularly eat berries, strawberries or other fruits that contain seeds, you must first remove them, also avoid using them in smoothies, jams and yogurt made with fresh fruit. The seeds would not be a problem if well ground.
- Corn and mushrooms: Corn and mushrooms are foods that are difficult to digest and cause gastrointestinal irritations or diarrhea attacks especially in people who already suffer from ulcerative colitis.
- Fatty meats: Meat should be generally reduced, however in any case you should choose lean cuts of meat. Meatballs, meatloaf or a good meat sauce are generally easier to digest rather than a hard steak cut, for example.
- Spices: Those suffering from colitis should follow a healthy low-fat diet, avoiding also the spices which however do not worsen the symptoms of everybody. It is rather subjective and if well ground the spices are much more digestible.
- Chocolate: Chocolate is made from sugar and caffeine and both can cause cramps and diarrhea attacks.
- Alcohol: Alcohol unfortunately does not improve the situation but sometimes worsens it even further, however all we just need to do is moderate the consumption, beer and soft drinks are those less tolerated especially if on an empty stomach.
- Onions: Onions are another filamentary food, and are very difficult to digest. They are digested better if well cooked or well chopped.
