5 low-calorie homemade sauces!
5 homemade sauce recipes with less calories allowing us to a treat ourselves once in a while!
Everybody will tell you to keep away from sauces, because they give a lot of calories to our dishes & hence make us put on weight, if we think about the classic mayonnaise we find out that 100g contains approximately 690Kcal, whilst cocktail sauce contains about 620Kcal per 100g, they are infact rich in salt, sugar & fat & are obviously very harmful. Therefore it is ideal to keep away from them or else find the so called “LIGHT” alternatives that you can prepare at home, ideal for everyone & rich in detoxifying fibres but also with a great taste!
Here are 5 different sauce recipes with little calories & lots of taste!
LIGHT MAYONNAISE
Ingredients for 4 people:
- 125 g Greek yogurt
- 4 spoons corn oil
- 1 teaspoon mustard
- a few drops lemon juice
- 1 pinch of salt & 1 of pepper
Pour the yogurt into a container, add the salt, pepper & mustard. With an electric whipper, whip & mix slowly all the ingredients, add slowly the oil & whip everything well until obtaining the right consistency.
1 spoon of this sauces gives us only 55Kcal.
BARBEQUE SAUCE
Ingredients for 1 jar:
- 1 red onion
- 2 red bio apples
- 1 spoon oil
- 1 piece of ginger
- 1 garlic segment
- 2 spoons apple vinegar
- 2 spoons tomato puree
- 2 spoons soy sauce
- 1 pinch chilli
Cook the ground onion in a pot with the oil for a few minutes, add the apple cubes with the peel, mix for another 2 minutes, than add all the other ingredients & also 1 small glass of water. Lower the flame, cover the pot & cook for about 15 minutes. Blend everything together & pour into a colander, pour into the jar & let cool, than store in the refrigerator. If compared to the original recipe it is prepared without sugar & has only 15Kcal per spoon.
EGGPLANT HUMMUS
Ingredients for 4 people:
- 2 eggplants
- 1 garlic wedge
- 3 spoons sesame butter (tahina)
- 1 lemon’s juice & a pinch of salt
Preheat the oven to 180°c, wash the eggplants, dry them & make holes in them with a fork. Cover an oven tray with baking paper & place the eggplants, bake them in the oven for about 1 & a 1/2 hours. Once cooled, extract the pulp & put it in a container, add the ground garlic, the tahina, lemon juice & salt. Mix well & serve. With just 98Kcal per portion it is ideal against cholesterol.
TARTAR SAUCE
Ingredients for 2 people:
- 3 pickled cucumbers
- 4 spoons Greek yogurt
- 2 teasponns capers
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 2 chives
- A pinch of sea salt & a pinch of pepper
Grind capers, pickles & chives, than pour them into a bowl together with the yogurt, lemon juice, salt & pepper, blend together with a mixer. Cover the bowl with cling film & place in the refrigerator until serving time. It can be stored for a maximum of 3 days. Each spoon gives us only 15Kcal.
COCKTAIL SAUCE
Ingredients for 4 people:
- half a dose of the light mayonnaise we prepared above
- 1 spoon ketchup
- 1 spoon brandy
- 2 teaspoons mustard
Add the ketchup to the mayonnaise & mix well, than add the brandy & finally add the mustard, mix everything delicately until obtaining a soft cream; serve immediately. 1 spoon contains approximately 60Kcal
These are the light versions of the most commonly known sauces & although sometimes we can use them it is always ideal to avoid them & dress our dishes with spices instead.
