Aphrodisiac food really exist? Lets learn some history and curiosity together and lets find out what are aphrodisiac food.

Since ancient times food has had a fundamental role and the vision of an aphrodisiac food was more linked to the aspect rather than the actual properties and had already lots of disagreements and arguments. In the I century A.D. People talked about it in their writings. Some properties derive from stories belonging to the mythology such as for example Aphrodite, the goddess of love, it is said that she considered sparrows sacred for their loving nature, for this they were used in various aphrodisiac potions, also amongst the list of aphrodisiac foods we also find anise, basil, carrots, sage, bulbs of orchid, pistachios, rocket salad, marine fennel, turnips, meat of scinco (a type of lizard) and river snails, while you should to stay away from dill, lentils, Cress, rue and water-lily.

  • Almond: symbol of fertility for centuries is in the list of aphrodisiac foods for its aroma which seems to increase the passion in women.
  • Aniseed: was used as an aphrodisiac already by the greeks and romans who believed that it had special powers.
  • Rocket salad: already in the first century after Christ it was considered aphrodisiac, it was added to parsnips and orchid bulbs or in combination with pine nuts and pistachios. The rocket salad is often used in salads and pasta.
  • Asafoetida: dried, its powder is used as a sexual stimulant in ayurvedic medicine it has a strong flavour similar to that of garlic.
  • Asparagus: the reputation of the asparagus is mainly due to its phallic shape, the asparagus is often drunk as an aphrodisiac food. It says that served either boiled or steamed can increase sexual desire.
  • Avocado: its notoriety begins from the Aztecs who called the avocado tree “Ahuacuatl” which translated means “tree of the testicles”.  The Ancient populations believed that the fruit hanging in couples on the tree resembled male testicles.
  • Bananas: obviously also here the phallic shape precedes the properties. An Islamic story tells that Adam and Eve covered themselves with banana leaves and not fig.From the nutritional point of view the bananas are rich in potassium and group B vitamins, important elements for the production of sexual hormones.
  • Basil: it is said that it stimulates the sexual desire and increases fertility.
  • Chocolate: already famous by the aztecs that called it  “food of the Gods”. Chocolate contains chemicals that produce an effect on the neurotransmitters in the brain, in addition to a substance related to caffeine and called theobromine. Chocolate contains more antioxidants than red wine.
  • Coffee: caffeine is a known stimulant for both the body and the mind.
  • Fennel: fennel was in time the subject of study and already in 1930 it was discovered that fennel is a source of natural plant estrogens. The use of fennel as an aphrodisiac dates back very far in time with the Egyptians who used it for the libido.
  • Garlic: garlic was used practically to treat everything from common cold to heart disease, and it says that it stimulates sexual desires.
  • Ginger: ginger root, raw or cooked in powder form is a stimulant of the circulatory system.
  • Honey: even honey has always been used very much and infact many medicines dating back to the times of the ancient Egyptians were based on honey, including medicines to treat sterility and impotence.
  • Nutmeg: The Chinese medicine uses a lot of nutmeg which is greatly appreciated by the Chinese women as an aphrodisiac. But we have to remember that in large quantities, it may have hallucinogen effects.
  • Oysters: are already famous from the II century after Christ and Juvenal in one of his satires described the uninhibited ways of doing of women after they had drunk wine and ate oysters. They are also very nutritious and rich in proteins.
  • Pineapple: rich in vitamin C is used in homeopathic treatment against impotence.
  • Truffles: the Greeks and the Romans considered the truffle an aphrodisiac. Its musky smell is said to stimulate and make the skin sensitive to the touch.
  • Vanilla: the fragrance and flavour of vanilla is said to increase libido. Filling glasses of champagne and adding a vanilla pod leads to a happy and sparkling continuation.
  • Wine: one or two glasses of wine can greatly improve a romantic meeting, since wine relaxes and helps to stimulate the senses, but be careful because the alcohol in excess is likely to increase the feeling of drowsiness, for which it is always better not to exceed a after romantic supper.

We have seen a list of  aphrodisiac foods which has virtually been the same for centuries, the only thing we can say has changed is the motto for which a food is considered an aphrodisiac or not and if in previous times they looked at the appearance which had to be more or less phallic, today we look at the composition and nutrients.
