Detox with asparagus!

This vegetable rich in potassium, folic acid & vitamin C, is diuretic & draining, & is ideal against water retention.

The asparagus that are in season in March, are rich in diuretic & energizing properties, they help free our tissues from liquid in excess & contrast water retention & orange peel skin.

We find various types of asparagus, each one with specific properties, but all are excellent for draining &:

  • Clean lungs & intestine
  • excellent remedy to remove toxins
  • they are alkaline (help keep an ideal balance).

Rich in vitamin C, carotenoids & group B vitamins, they are also antifatigue.

In Italy we find 8 different types of asparagus, whereas in nature we find approximately 200 different types, & they change colour according to their origin & type of cultivation, infact we can find them green, white or purple.  But the wild ones contain the largest number of anti-oxidants & therefore are the most effective.

White asparagus or albino is grown in complete darkness, this tecnique is called “whitening”.  Growing in the dark they are less fibrous & sweeter & have a strong detoxifying power.

Purple asparagus has great digestive properties, it is a speciality of the area of Albenga in the Liguria region & is cooked boiled.

Green asparagus is the most widespread & rich in chlorophyll anti-oxidant, it contains a lot of vitamins & minerals, grows in open air, in Italy it is mostly grown in the areas of Bologna & Ferrara.

Wild Asparagus is the most bitter but also the most cleansing of all, we often find it in supermarkets, it is much thinner than the cultivated type.  Being a wild plant that grows spontaneously it contains a larger number of phytonutrients & its bitter taste is a sign of its extraordinary cleansing power.

Asparagus is used in  many recipes but the best match to use fully all its properties is the one with wholegrain cereals,  for example making a plate from rice, barley, quinoa a spoon of extra virgin olive oil & if desired a pinch of grated hard cheese, this becomes a tasty & complete meal.  We can also use asparagus in beauty, preparing some treatments against orange peel.  Its properties which help to remove liquids in excess make it an excellent  ally for treatments against water retention.  We can prepare a decoction by pouring a tablespoon of dried asparagus roots into half a litre of cold water, boil for about 15 minutes, filter & use the lukewarm compound for treatments against cellulite & edema.
