GURUKUL STUDYING AT THE MASTER’S HOUSE

Have you ever heard of the word gurukul? If you have had the opportunity to visit India, or to deal with masters who come from the tradition, you may have heard of what are very very particular solutions.

Gurukul studying at the master’s house

The gurukul or gurukulam (Sanskrit:गुरुकुल)it is a type of education system typical of ancient India, where the student lives close to in the same house as the teacher.

The word gurukula is a combination of guru meaning master and kula meaning home, family.

Normally the student learns from the master “guru” and helps him in daily life, and the aim is to discipline the mind but also to gain direct experience.

The Gurukul Tradition

According to Tradition, the student agrees to all the tasks he receives from the master, is enthusiastic and grateful, so much so that at the end of the stay he “repays” the master with an important action (perhaps a task given by the master himself) or even monetarily . The length of stay can vary from days to years.

The gurukul system is very ancient, the Upanishads (1000-800 BC) mention this school system several times.

Of course, being a real school system, it starts as early as 8 years of age and could even go up to 25 years. Gurukul was considered to be a public school so it was also supported by government and public donations.

Still today there are various gurukul style schools in India, while instead we do not find them at all in the rest of Europe, so the Styleoga® school represents the only model of western gurukula, which opens its doors for a few weeks in the summer to give space to 200/300 hours hatha yoga training or yin yoga.

Hosted in the masters’ house, 2 students at a time if for a short period or only 1 if for a long period, find themselves living and studying according to the ancient traditions.

The morning is usually marked by theoretical studies while the afternoon is dedicated to practical application.

Furthermore, the moments of lunch and dinner are fundamental, where teachers and students can change the subject of the discussions and simply enjoy a moment of conviviality.
