HOW DOES THE THYROID WORK!
Thyroid how much do you know about this gland that can complicate both life and weight?
The thyroid is a small gland at the base of the neck.
The thyroid serves to produce thyroid hormones, fundamental substances for our life.
They are essential to the fetus, because they the body allow to develop in a correct way, especially in the central nervous system.
If during the birth or pre-birth phases they are missing this may cause serious deficit intellectual disabilities.
In adult life thyroid hormones are essential for the energy metabolism: they control the energy balance, i.e. the system which regulates all vital functions and consequently also our shape.
How does the thyroid work?
When the thyroid does not work in the right way, the level of thyroid hormones in the blood lowers.
You may suffer from hypothyroidism i.e. malfunctioning and although it may be difficult to recognize as the symptoms can be confused with more common diseases such as fatigue, lazy intestine etc.
The causes can be congenital due to errors in the development of the thyroid or acquired as for example due to lack of iodine in the diet. In this case we must ensure a good level of iodine in the diet, or there is a malfunction due to autoimmune thyroiditis disease in which the immune system no longer recognizes the thyroid as part of your body and produces antibodies against the gland, destroying it.
This type is the most commonly used, and unfortunately it is not preventable. There is however a common and quite simple cure i.e. assume synthetic thyroid hormones every day for the rest of your life.
Apart from HYPOTHYROIDISM there is also HYPERTHYROIDISM which is the opposite of hypothyroidism, this occurs when there are too many thyroid hormones in circulation, almost a superfunctioning.
There are different types, the most common is the Graves’ Disease, an autoimmune disease in which you produce wrong antibodies that stimulate the thyroid to operate more.
The symptoms of hyperthyroidism are very specific:
- The heart beats faster than usual (palpitations),
- Increase in sweating,
- irritability,
- weight loss.
In most cases the cause is genetic. It is very important therefore in these cases to have an early diagnosis, in order to avoid the most severe complications of the disease.
The cure may vary depending on the cause: if it is of the autoimmune type; there are drugs that block the thyroid function bringing it back to normal.
There are also two so-called definitive cures:
– Surgical removal of the thyroid
– Radioactive iodine.
Radioactive iodine is deposited in the thyroid and almost totally destroys it thanks to the rays that it emits. It is like a removal, but without using a bistoury.
The thyroid is therefore a very important gland and keeping it healthy is absolutely necessary!
