Dust mites allergy!

What is the dust mites allergy, how do you catch it and how do you cure it?

WHAT ARE DUST MITES?

Dust mites are microscopic creatures and some are even harmless. For many people however dust mites are responsible for allergies that can be also very serious but that usually can be kept under control.
Dust mites, are microorganisms able to cause allergic reactions also of asthmatic type.

The dust mites allergy is of perennial type, i.e. it lasts throughout the year, even if usually the symptoms worsen in autumn this is due to the fact that during this period the heating is turned on, thus creating a perfect habitat for the proliferation of these organisms.
Dust mites in order to live and multiply in fact prefer environments with temperatures above 20°C and a percentage of humidity above 50%.
To cause however the allergic attack are not the mites themselves, but what remains of them following their decomposition and the substances present in their faeces.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

The symptoms are those typical of allergic reactions such as rhinitis (which involves the sensation of itching of the nose, continuous sneezing, etc.), conjunctivitis and eczema but can also lead to asthma and today we know that almost half of the asthmatic patients suffer in fact from allergy to mites.

HOW TO FIGHT DUST MITES ALLERGY AT HOME

At home we can use some tricks to fight dust mites allergy.

Mites tend to colonize mainly beds, sofas and furnishing fabrics such as curtains and carpets, in addition of course to all the furniture on which dust accumulates.
In particular, however, attention should be paid to the mattress and pillows that represent the perfect environment for mites, thanks to the increase of temperature and humidity which develops with the prolonged contact of the body, and to the large amount of scales which deviate from the skin and scalp (favourite food for mites) following rubbing against sheets and pillowcases; and therefore at night the symptoms are worsened precisely for this reason.

For all allergies one should avoid contact with the allergen substance, in this case with mites and even if it seems almost impossible we can however use some precautions at home:

  • Use mattresses, pillows and bed linen that are “anti-mite”, i.e. impermeable to allergens and breathable;
  • Change the bed linen a couple of times a week, washing it all at high temperatures in order to kill the mites (60°C)
  • Remove from the bedroom all the furniture and ornaments that can lead to the accumulation of dust, using synthetic fabrics for curtains and blankets and removing carpets and rugs from the floor.
  • For cleaning, to carry out everyday especially in the bedroom, Use damp or electrostatic cloths in order not to spread the dust and vacuum cleaners with HEPA Filter (High Efficiency Particulate Air), which allows to retain in its interior small size particles such as allergens
  • Ventilate frequently all the rooms of the house and use dehumidifiers to avoid that the moisture percentage increases
  • Maintain the temperature of the house below 20°C
