Headaches are a very annoying & disturbing disorder, especially when it occurs during the day or even worse in the morning as soon as awake, disrupting all our daily activities.

Here are the different types of headache:

  • Migraine most probably the most widespread sort of headache; it  usually causes very strong pains that can last either very few hours or can go on for days.  Usually the pain starts from the centre of the head & is normally accompanied by nausea or vomiting, but also a very high sensitivity to light & various noises.  This type of headache usually appears at puberty or adoloscent stage and could be linked to a hereditary factor.
  • Tension Headaches Hits mostly people in an adult age, it is not hereditary and can last various days, weeks and even years.  The difference from a migraine is that the pain spread all over the head, causing strong tension, nervousness & stress & it is also accompanied by depression & anxiety.
  • Cluster Headaches causes strong & intensive pain in the area were eyes & temples are located.  Often the pain is accompanied by red eyes, eye watering & a swollen eyelid.  These attacks usually last very little, but are so intense that they could be unbearable.  A variation of this type of headache is chronic headache which pain and intensity symptoms vary according to the patient.

Usually headaches are caused by stress, fasting, medicine use, very strong emotions.  The emotional component is fundamental in causing & influencing the headache, just think about the  so called weekend migraine that always turns up when returning to work after a relaxing weekend.  Also diet is very important & contributes towards headache or not, infact there are many substances present in foods that can cause a headache, such as; monosodium glutamate, found in many broth cubes, but also the nitrites found in preserved foods, in alcohol, in soy  and in all the hard & fermented cheeses.  Also an excessive consumption of caffein affects the headache, but also climatic changes and the essences found in perfumes or fragrances.
