Psoriasis cures & remedies!
Which are the most effective remedies to cure psoriasis, 6 natural remedies to calm the nuisances.
Lets start by understanding what it is & who suffers from this disorder, & inform that first of all it is not contagious. It is a chronic skin disorder that hits about 80 million people all over the world & approximately 2-3% of the European population. It is an autoimmune disease that manifests itself when our immune system does not function correctly & attacks our skin without any actual reason. This type of attack presents itself as red marks on our skin usually covered by white desquamation. Psoriasis can hit either small areas of our body but also very large areas too. It is not a deadly disease but those suffer from psoriasis have a higher risk of getting other pathologies like; diabetes, psoriatic arthritis, heart disease & depression.
Psoriasis can manifest itself at any age, but usually it appears for the first time between 15 & 35 years of age, & although one cannot heal from psoriasis, it can be reduced & kept under control. There are various stages of this disease that are identified according to location, seriousness & aspect, the most common one is Plaque psoriasis, this hits about 80% of the people affected by psoriasis. A person can also contract more than one type of psoriasis at the same time, that is why it is very important to know as much as possible about the symptoms & cures, but most of all one must know the three main characteristics:
- Location: Some types of psoriasis like for example plaque psoriasis, pustular or erythematous, can locate themselves on any part of the body.
- Seriousness: Every type of psoriasis can vary in seriousness according to its extension on our body. Erythematous psoriasis is the most serious form in this sense because it can also reach the whole body & cover it completely.
- Aspect: According to the aspect we can define the various types of psoriasis. For example plaque psoriasis is manifested as red marks with silver coloured squamation. Guttate psoriasis instead is manifested as little cuts in the shape of a water drop & finger nail psoriasis is seen as little unevenly sunken or raised nails.
Psoriasis apart from having a physical impact with marks & itching it has also a very strong mental impact, it can also influence self esteem & also they way one sees & judges himself & unfortunately a low self esteem is even more accentuated by psoriasis.
As we have explained it is an autoimmune disease, of which we know only a few risk factors deriving from some bad habits that can either accentuate it or even make us develop it:
- Stress: First on the list we find stress which has often been linked many times to the development of psoriasis, it can also worsen the symptoms & cause even more itching.
- Weight: many people suffering from psoriasis lead a sedentary life style, hence have a higher risk of gaining excessive weight due to the mental impact the disease has on their social life. Being overweight can make psoriasis treatment even more difficult especially where the skin folds.
- Smoking: recent studies have shown how smokers have a higher risk in developing psoriasis. Moreover smoking can reduce the curing effect of some medicines.
- Alcohol: there is scientific evidence that proves that an excessive comsuption of alcohol can increase the risk of encountering psoriasis.
- High cholesterol level: a high cholesterol level is a very important risk factor.
TRIGGERING FACTORS
Although a cure for psoriasis has not yet been found & nobody is sure about the links, it has some common triggering factors.
Researchers suspect that psoriasis is due to a combination of genetic & environmental factors. Some people can get psoriasis due to a hereditary tendance towards autoimmune or inflammatory diseases, but psoriasis develops itself only when there is a factor such as an infection present, the assumption of certain medicines, trauma or stress, infact the recognised triggering factors so far are:
- Stress: It has been proven that it can cause psoriasis or worsen it.
- Skin trauma: When psoriasis appears on the parts of skin affected by trauma (scratches, vaccines, sunburn) it is called the Koebner phenomenon
- Infections: Streptococcus infections can cause a particular type of psoriasis called guttate psoriasis.
- Medicines: It has been proven that certain medicines can either trigger off or worsen psoriasis.
- Pharmaceutical lithium for psychiatric use.
- Anti-malaria drugs (quinacrine, chloroquine & hydroxychloroquine).
- Certain blood pressure medicines, like those containing beta propranolol blocker.
- Medicines containing quinidine.
- Certain drugs used for arthritis.
- The suspension of certain steroids (corticosteroids).
So as we can see stress is a risk factor & a trigerring factor at the same time, hence it is necessary to manage it in the best of ways, stress management techniques & stress relieving activities are always recommended together with medicines & medications. Every cure infact has various aspects & the stress management one is considered fundamental, it is therefore advisable to practice meditation, breathing & yoga exercises. For example Hatha yoga (yoga of positions) is an excellent exercise, so are breathing exercises, meditation & relaxation exercises, moreover styleoga yoga makes us also sweat & hence expell all the toxins accumulated giving us a better sense of relaxation & better ability to handle unexpected situations.
Another important factor for psoriasis is our diet, even though there are no strong relations between them it is very important to highlight that a correct diet helps to improve the situation. No specific diet exists to relieve from psoriasis but some foods are more “at risk” for a person suffering from psoriasis, therefore it is recommended to possibly avoid SATURATED FATS which accentuate the inflammation & obviously the psoriasis that is characterised by a state of inflammation of the whole system.
Saturated fats are mainly found in dairy products, certain meats & in certain oils (like palm oil & coconut oil), whereas the so called “trans fats” can be formed during certain industrial processes the vegetable fat goes through & therefore be found in the transformed foods (in particular industrial prepacked foods & margarine).
It is necessary to consume with moderation whole milk, butter & aged cheese; preferring instead, skimmed milk, yoghurt & fresh cheese or cheese flakes. Red meat should be drastically reduced & replaced with white meat, fresh fruit & vegetables should also be inserted. Healthy Eating is at the base of a correct life style & hence reduces the risk of disease & sickness. Prevention is fundamental even when it comes to psoriasis & we can also do a lot even at table.
