Resilience: the art of survival, how to develop this skill that helps us resist and react to events surviving in the best of ways.
We hear more often talking about RESILIENCE nowadays, but what does it really mean, where does this word come from and how does a person with a developed resilience behave?
WHAT DOES RESILIENCE MEAN
In psychology resilience is the ability to face and overcome in a positive manner dramatic events which generally leave a trauma behind them, helping us reorganise positively our life infront of hardship, build up something new, yet remaining sensitive to the opportunities that liffe offers without altering our own identity. However the word comes from metallurgy and was used to indicate the ability to maintain actual structure even after deformation. To sumarize, a resilient person is capable of not being overwhelmed by a traumatic event but on the contrary be inspired and change things, an adaptive method of survival that evolves itself according to the situations without succumbing itself. People with great resilience manage to face hardship, organising their innerselves and reaching new even more important goals. Normally these are flexible, dynamic and creative people who treasure past experiences.
CHARACTERISTICS OF RESILIENT PERSONS
According to certain studies and certain scientists resilient people have certain characteristics that differ them from the others and these are:
- ATTRACTION TO CHALLENGES: they accept change as a positive factor and difficulty is not avoided or considered dangerous, but is rather seen as an opportunity for growth.
- COMMITMENT: resilient people are neither passive nor anxious, but very active and put a lot of effort in everything they do.
- SELF-CONTROL AND CONTROL ON OTHERS: resilient people believe that they can master events. Those who have a high level of control are ready to modify themselves and their actions in order to improve the strategy.
HOW TO DEVELOP RESILIENCE
Not all of us are born with this gift, it can come through the years, it can also be developed or created by ourselves, just like positive thinking it is necessary to make an effort and practice. In order to start developing this very important characteristic we can start with little things that are part of our daily life:
-Accept change (if we realise that its part of our life we will be able to evolve and change, evolution is necessary for survival)
-Think positively and see ourselves with a positive point of view, by taking care of ourselves and our needs first of all (we must learn how to say no if we don’t like or want something and dedicate time to ourselves when necessary)
-Set realistic targets which we can actually reach (by set false targets we only risk worsening our situation)
-See the possibility of change even in traumas and crisis (if we manage to see through situations and learn from them, than we are also capable of seeing change)
-Have good relationships with relatives, accepting help when needed and in difficult situations
-Do not always let the others decide but choose to act with decision.
