Unfortunately recent studies have shown that panic attacks are on a constant increase, with very harmful effects on those who suffer from them, very often left on their own & loaded with medicines.  Naturopathy & all the alternative remedy science have identified numerous remedies coming from; phytotherapy, aromatherapy, physical activity & food, here are a few.

Phytotherapy remedies

The phytotherapy remedies for curing panic attacks correspond to medicinal plants & herbs able to relax our nervous system & calm the typical anxiety states of this disorder, these plants & herbs are:

  • Oats (Avena Sativa)  reduces panic & anxiety effects.  it can be consumed as a simple food, or as a tincture for a sedative action on our central nervous system, in psychophysical disorders, & also to cure insomnia
  • Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) Its external parts are commonly used in teas & infusions or tinctures, to treat all disorders related to the nervous system, including anxiety & panic attacks
  • Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) its root is used to treat nervous disorders, lowers blood pressure, calms spastic pains, it is also used to treat anxiety type attacks such as panic attacks, agitation, distress, tremors, abdominal cramps or anxiety.

With regards to our diet, we know that one of the main causes of panic attacks is hypoglycemia that is a shortage of sugar in our blood caused by various chemical reactions put our organism on alert that acts as if it is under attack.  It is therefore fundamental that the level of glycemia in our blood is kept constant during the day.

Whole grain cereals contribute in maintaining glycemic level stables thanks to their high fibre content, it would therefore be ideal using them as a substitute to pasta & white bread.  We must absolutely avoid refined carbohydrates, white sugar, industrial sweeteners & prepacked fruit juices, all these give us glycemic swings.

On the other hand we should prefer cane sugar & honey, also magnesium is very useful, it acts positively on our central nervous system & we find it in:

  • fresh vegetables
  • beans
  • fish
  • oily seeds
  • almonds & figs

To be avoided:

  •  red meat
  • pork (mostly preserved)
  • all foods that stimulate our nervous system such as; tea, coffee & choclate.

A general rule that is used for everybody is that to maintain a good glycemic balance pairing together carbohydrates (whole grain cereals, potatoes) & protein (meat derivates, fish derivates, eggs, cheese & legumes) in each meal besides fruit & vegetables.

Panic attacks could be caused by various reasons & factors such as, anxiety, stress or organic diseases like hyperthyroidism or other factors like drug and/or alcohol abuse or abstinence, in any case we must completely modify our life style & the relationship with our body, hence an adeguate dose of physical activity can only help.  Physical activity infact plays a fundamental role, because it allows our organism to relieve itself, free itself from toxins & feel better physically, it also helps us improve our self esteem independantly from what type of activity carried out.  There are obviously some types which are more indicated because they help our organism find more tranquility.  Amongst the best choices we find bioenergetics, a psychophysical technique created by Alexander Lowen, it is excellent to remove energy blockages & transform the defensive mechanisms created both at physical & psycho-emotional level.  Another type of ideal activity is practicing yoga, that as already explained in other articles helps us relax through breathing & these breathing exercises help our mind to unwind for a few minutes from the typical panic attacks strong reactions & bring us back to reality in a very soft & delicate way, naturally also activities like Tai Chi that puts together meditation & motion could be very useful just like dancing that besides the motion has a very strong emotive component linked to fun.
