Varicose veins symptoms and remedies!
What are varicose veins, how can we prevent and cure them?
WHAT ARE VARICOSE VEINS
Varicose veins (or varicosis) are abnormal and saccular dilatations of the veins, especially of the lower limbs, which often assume an abnormal behaviour and today represent a frequent but also well tolerated pathology, for which normally people suffering from varicose veins adopt spontaneously remedies such as resting with legs raised, elastic stockings, massages with suitable ointments. Only in rare cases, the varicose veins come to the attention of the doctor and finally to the surgical intervention.
Causes of varicosis or varicose veins
- There are several factors that trigger the varicose veins:
Constipation, which hinders the return of venous blood upwards - Obesity
- The deficiency of the muscle pump
- Working in an erect position (standing) in warm environment (which favours the dilatation of blood vessels)
- Alterations of the veins present at birth (congenital);
- Age (between 30 and 50 years);
- Female sex (mainly).
The factor that is certainly more influential is the POSTURE and in fact if you hold a posture especially if prolonged, the venous pressure increases considerably, up to ten times the normal pressure. As a result, jobs, occupations that require an erect posture for long periods of time or long journeys by car or by plane, trigger the onset of edema and varicose veins.
The varicose veins are much more common amongst women and after the age of 50, in obese people and especially post pregnancy for the high venous pressure that pregnancy determines in the lower limbs. Even the so-called familiarity is a very important factor.
VARICOSE VEINS SYMPTOMS
In the majority of people no symptoms are manifested until they are truly visible.
Usually you feel the sense of heaviness in the limb, especially in the evening and than realize that an edema begins to manifest itself in the zone around the malleolus, especially the internal one; in correspondence of the varicose veins there is a zone of increased sensation of heat (hyperthermia) sometimes accompanied by strong sense of itching. In other cases a superficial phlebitis can develop or bleeding from due to the breakage of the varix.
In the case of varicose veins there is obviously an alteration of the blood circulation and precisely for this reason the tissues of the affected parties are particularly sensitive to lesions, therefore infections and wounds heal slowly and tend to become chronic varicose ulcers (absolutely not curable).
Then there is a very important factor especially in women which is the aesthetic issue, in fact varicose veins or varicosis can produce rather garish irregularities.
TREATMENT FOR VARICOSE VEINS
The varicose veins require an adequate therapy, especially to prevent painful and debilitating complications (varicoflebite, dermatitis, Varicose ulcer) and treatment usually passes through:
–Healthy Lifestyle: although there is no absolute certainties it is however a good idea to change your lifestyle, making it active and healthy both in the food supply and in habits.
– Pharmacological therapy: it is based on the use of “flebotonic” substances, i.e. that increase the tone of the venous wall so as to reduce the tiredness, anti-edema, (which reduce edema), profibrinolytics (which prevent the formation of thrombi due to blood stagnation) and anti-inflammatories.
–Elastocompression :compression with bandages and stockings, which is based on the use of graduated elastic stockings that exert a compression decrease from the foot to the thigh (the decreasing trend causes the major compression in the ankle pushe the blood upwards, encountering always less resistance as it slowly rises.)
–Sclerotherapy: this practice consists in injecting within the veins chemical substances that cause first the formation of a thrombus, hence the transformation of the fibrous venous wall .
–Surgical therapy : We opt for surgical therapy as a last resource as we have already said, there is an operation done in order to reduce the problem and consists in the removal of the venous portion affected by the varix and in the reunification of the upstream and downstream portions of the removal.
