Vegan diet yes or no? In what does the vegan diet consist of, and it is really dangerous or can it be used by everyone?
These days the issue is about the pros and cons of the vegan diet due to the latest drammatic facts that saw children die because their parents imposed them a vegan diet, and in this moment by appealing to the constitution and the law that obliges parents to guarantee and protect their children’s health, a new law would like to be introduced by modifying article 572: “that is those who adopt or impose to children under the age of 16 a nutritional diet without the essential elements required for a correct growth is punished with a maximum of 1 year of imprisonment”. Furthermore the law implies additional penalties for more serious situations and if the children are under the age of 3 years.
Obviously vegans stick to their reasons, whilst those against claim that this type of diet is too restricting and excludes certain nutritional elements that are essential for the organism’s wellbeing, especially when it comes to children.
WHAT DOES THE VEGAN DIET CONSIST OF
Lets see what is and is not included in this so called VEGAN diet.
The vegan philosophy comes from the Unites States and was invented by Donald Watson, and was than spread as a global ethical movement. Besides from dictating the rules for the nutritional aspects, a lifestyle wants to be introduced were this will exclude completely the use and consumption in all areas of any substance, material, clothing or decoration of animal origin. Infact nowadays we find almost any type of product made from ecological material, such as vegan shoes, vegan cosmetics and so on.
Which are the rules to follow?
Vegans decide not to feed on ingredients derived directly or indirectly from animals, hence only a few finished food products can be chosen. The vegan diet includes cereals, legumes and most of all products made from soy, barley, sesame and rice, yeast flakes, besides naturally lots of fruit and vegetables. However in all this it would seem like certain fundamental nutrients are missing and those who are against this obviously underline this aspect, however from the vegans’ point of view the specific indication is the one to prevent the lack of these nutritious substances by eating alternative foods such as yeasts, algae or certain types of vegetable milks which contain for example vitamin B12 (found only in foods of animal origin), without in anyway going against their ethical principles.
Obviously criticism comes from various parts but to tell the truth and also for free expression we must say that opposing scientific opinions do not lack either, where they retain that the vegan diet is a good method for preventing cardiocirculatory diseases, besides certain types of cancer and famous professors and scientists use their fame to sustain a diet free from foods of animal origin, not much for an ethical point but for a health and prevention reason especially for cancer such as gutt cancer, colon cancer, stomach cancer, were 1 out of 3 cases is caused by bad eating habits.

However on the other hand many experts sustain that the vegan diet, basing themselves exclusively on the assumption of fruit, vegetables, legumes and cereals, would result in an unbalanced diet regime. Therefore according to this the vegan diet is not capable to provide the sufficient quantity of fibre necessary for regulating the glycemic index of meals, a very fundamental aspect to be able to avoid the glycation of the plasma protein. These experts therefore claim that a vegan diet could not be followed for a long period of time.
There are many theories and also various ways of nutrition, but lets remember the 2 mainstreams, even though in this regime we find many variations.
VEGAN AND VEGETARIAN CHOICE
-A vegetarian person does not eat any type of animal or derivates including deli products therefore neither meat nor fish.
-A vegan person, besides not eating any type of animal does not eat any product deriving from animals such as: milk and dairy products, eggs and honey, at the base of this there is the thought that in order to obtain these products the animals are mistreated and killed.
